long, curved. The bark is deeply divided into broad
ridges that are covered with purplish scales. The tree
commonly attains 100 feet in height and 4 feet in di-
ameter, with a tall, straight stem and pyramidal crown.
Branches are in definite whorls of long lateral
branches sweeping upward in graceful curves. This is
the largest conifer of eastern forests and is long-lived.
The wood is light, straight-grained, easily worked, but
not strong. It is used in cabinet work, interior finishes,
woodenware, matches, and lumber. A large part of
the winter diet of red squirrels is made up of the seed
of the white pine. Grows best in well drained soils.
To reduce potential insect problems, white pine
should not be planted near Norway spruce. Nice 6" -
8" plants. Average years to 8' height, 5 - 7 years.

long, light chestnut-brown and lustrous at maturity.
The thick bark is divided shallowly into broad, flat
ridges that are covered with thin reddish-brown
scales. The tree usually grows to 70-80 feet in
height with a trunk 2-3 feet in diameter.
Red pine has a tall, straight trunk and a symmetri-
cal crown. This species is an important timber tree.
The wood is hard, very close-grained, light, and
quite strong. It is used among other things for con-
struction, pilings, and flooring. Nice 6" - 8" plants.

mostly 2-ranked ( one row on each side of the
branch). The cylindrical cones are erect, dark rich
purple in color, 2-4 inches long. Bark on old trees is
thick, rich brown and separated into scaly plates. Bal-
sam fir has a symmetrical, slender, pyramidal crown
that is quite dense. The tree grows up to 60 feet in
height, with trunk diameter of 2 feet. The wood is
light, weak, soft, and coarse-grained. Not much used
for lumber, the balsam fir is utilized in the paper indus-
try for pulp. It is planted as an ornamental and prized

WHITE CEDAR,
is often called Arborvitae
( Tree of Life) when used as an ornamental planting.
The flattened branchlets have 4 rows of overlapping
bright green scales, are much branched, and form hori-
zontal fan-like sprays. Foliage has a spicy fragrance
when crushed. Mature cones are light red-brown, a - ½
inch long. The tree grows to 40 - 50 feet in height with
a short, often lobed and buttressed trunk 2 - 3 feet in
diameter. The bark is gray to reddish-brown, often
tinged with orange, and separated into flat connected
ridges. The wood is light, soft, durable, brittle, coarse-
grained, and fragrant. It is used for posts, rails, shin-
gles, and pulpwood. This species is a favorite source of
browse for deer and rabbits in northern swamps. Good
for hedges and wind breaks. Nice 6 “- 10" plants. Aver-

HEMLOCK
,
is a graceful, lacy-foliaged tree of the
cool moist forests. The flat needles are round-tipped,
½ - 1 inch long. Cones are roughly oval, ½ - ¾ inch
long, with scales about as wide as long. The pendant
cones usually remain on the tree until the following
spring. Hemlock is remarkably tolerant to shading by
over-story trees, and may remain in the understory in
natural stands for 25 - 200 years. The tree is usually
60 - 70 feet high with a trunk diameter of 2 - 3 feet. It
often has a broad-based pyramidal shape. Ends of
branches are often drooping and “feathery”. The
wood is light, soft, brittle, and difficult to work. It is
used occasionally for rough or construction lumber
and for pulpwood. Grows in cool moist soils to well
drained. Good for hedges and windbreaks. Nice 6" -

JAPANESE LARCH,
a 30 - 90' tall pointed top
tree, broadly pyramidal. The larch are the only coni-
fer that drop their needles in autumn, renewing them
each spring. There are conspicuous warty “spurs”
on the twigs. In season, numerous soft needles, ¾”
- 1" long, are clustered at the end of these spurs.
Cones remain on the tree all winter, brown turning
black. An important northern timber tree (used for
poles, posts, railroad ties). Seeds, needles, or inner
bark eaten by ruffed grouse, snowshoe hare, red
squirrels, porcupines and deer. Will grow well in

,
leaves are 5 - 8 inches long and have 7 - 11
lobes. Each lobe is sharply pointed. Leaves are decidu-
ous, turning red before they fall in autumn. The tree will
reach 60 - 80 feet in height. The acorns are usually about
an inch long with a flat, shallow cup at the base. The
species is often planted as ornamental or shade trees.
Grown on a wide variety of soils, best on silt or sandy
looms. Wood of the red oak is used for flooring, furniture,
boxes, crates, caskets, timber, handles. The hardness
and resistance to wear of red oak, plus its beauty, make it
preferred for flooring for residences. Strong 8" - 12"

has deciduous leaves 5 - 9 inches long with
7 - 9 rounded lobes. The acorn is about ¾ inch long, light
chestnut brown in color. The tree reaches 80 - 100 feet in
height. In the open, white oak develops a rounded spread-
ing crown. Growth is good on all but the driest shallow
soils, but is best on deep, well- drained loamy soils. Most
white oak is made into lumber for flooring, furniture, tight
cooperage, millwork, timbers, handles, boxes and crates.

is one of the largest and most important
hardwoods of eastern forests. Leaves are 3 - 5 inches across,
rounded at the base, with sparse, large, pointed teeth on the
margins. In autumn, sugar maple leaves are exceptionally col-
orful with brilliant reds and yellows. The fruit, a U-shaped pair
of winged seeds, ripens in the fall. The tree grows 75 - 100
feet in height with a trunk diameter of 3 - 4 feet. In crowded
stands, sugar maple develops a tall, straight trunk and a nar-
row crown. Open-grown trees have a shorter stem and
rounded crown. The bark of mature trees is thick, light gray to
brown, and broken by vertical furrows into plate-like scales.
The sap is used to make maple syrup and maple sugar. Sugar
maple is a popular shade and ornamental tree. Grows best on

ing wind, rodents, mowers, deer, drought and herbi-
cides. The other major benefit of tree Tubes is that they
create a "mini-greenhouse" around the tree which con-
serves moisture & promotes terminal development.
Seedling survival is greatly improved. Tubes are left on
the trees and photo-degrade in 5 to 7 years. Tree
Tubes have been used commercially for years.
Tubes can be used on transplanted seedlings, previ-
ously planted seedlings, wild volunteers, grafts, stump
sprouts and even pre-germinated acorns or nuts. They
can be used on nut trees, fruit trees, windbreaks, shade
or reforestation trees.
Proper installation is critical to the tree shelter's suc-

The easy way to supplement the essentials of tree growth!
WATER: VisPore Tree Mats give your tree 9 square feet of weed-
free soil all to itself, with no competition from thirsty weeds.
LIGHT: VisPore Tree Mat keeps weeds away so they can't hog
the sunlight and shade out seedlings.

Fertilizer Pellets
- Provide the push needed to get tree seedlings growing in the poorer soils on which most
plantings are made. The tablets do not dissolve; instead, the nutrients are gradually released over a period
up to two years by the action of soil bacteria. Analysis: 20-10-5 plus calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, and
zinc. Each tablet is 10 grams.

BARLEY STRAW
Barley straw has been publicized as an effective, organic remedy to algae problems. However, research
shows that barley straw does not always solve algae problems. More research is being done, but pond own-
ers should be wary of absolute claims regarding barley straw’s effectiveness.
British researchers have found that barley straw controls algae through a complicated chemical reaction that
is poorly understood. Since the US Environmental Protection Agency has determined that barley straw is not
a legal pesticide, it may not be sold as an algae control product. Homeowners may apply it to their ponds, but
only with the caution that it may not always work as expected.
If you plan to apply barley straw to a pond, follow these general recommendations:
*
Apply barley straw to a pond as soon as ice is gone. The algae control properties of barley straw take
several weeks to begin.
*
Determine your pond’s size in acres, then plan to apply 200 - 250 pounds of barley straw per acre
(about 4 - 5 bales)
*
When you get the bales, break them up & fluff up the stems so they make a big, loose pile. Stuff the
barley straw into several woven sacks, like 50# onion bags. Insert a buoyant object into the bag. The
assembly should be able to float at the surface of the pond.
*
Place the floating sack on the pond surface & anchor it to stay in place, the sacks should be spaced
evenly around the pond to assure even coverage. Barley straw should not be anchored near the edge
of the pond, except near an inflowing water course. Make sure they never block the pond spill way. *
*(Taken from the article “How to prevent and control algae in farm ponds” by Jim Ochterski, Cornell Coopera-
tive Extension South Central New York Agricultural Team, and Rebecca Schneide, Cornell University Depart-
ment of Natural Resources, with research from North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service, Purdue Uni-
versity, and the USDA NRCS. April 2003)

BIRD AND BAT HOUSES
BATHOUSE
Fight West Nile Virus with bats. Bats can eat thousands of night flying
insects, including mosquitoes, so many people are now realizing their
benefits. Bats prefer warm houses, so placement of the house is impor-
tant. Position the house 15' - 20' high on an exposure that receives at
least 6 hours of sunlight. Any exposure except the north should be fine.
Best sites are 20' - 25' from trees or other obstructions. Houses should
be placed on the side of a building or on a pole, not in a tree. Put the
bat houses out in April or May.

BLUEBIRD HOUSES
We celebrate the beautiful Bluebird as a symbol of hope and
happiness. Bluebird are in jeopardy primarily because they
cannot find enough places to breed successfully. Bluebirds
most often compete for nesting sites with house sparrows and
starlings. Very early in the spring, bluebirds begin nesting in
rural localities. They prefer open areas with scattered trees
where the ground is not covered with tall under growth. Pas-
tures and large lawns are good locations.
BBB - Bluebird House $11.83 each
BUTTERFLY HOUSES
Butterfly houses provide shelter from wind and rain and provide caterpillars a
nice place to pupate. Butterfly houses have slots the ideal size for keeping
birds out while giving butterflies protection and are beautiful garden decora-
tions.
BFH - Butterfly House - $16.13 each

KESTREL HOUSES
American Kestrel and Sparrow Hawk prefer open urban or cultivated ar-
eas containing scattered trees or other high perches, such as utility lines.
Their habitat is varied, including forest edges, orchards and pastures.
AKH - American Kestrel House - $18.28 each
WREN HOUSE
House Wrens prefer areas with trees and shrubs. Hang the wren house
6' - 10' high in a tree or shrub. It pays to put up 2 - 3 wren houses in a
back yard. The house may be 20' - 50' apart. They seldom build second
or third nests in the same house in the same year; they will move to one
of the vacant houses instead.
WRH - Wren House - $10.75 each
WOOD DUCK HOUSES
Wood duck boxes are the most successful when placed over water,
but can also be placed in woodland habitat up to half-a-mile from open
water and should be mounted on a post 6-8' high with the entrance
hole facing south or west. Protecting previously used nests is very im-
portant. Once successful, a female will nest in the same cavity year
after year.
WDH - Wood Duck House - $18.28 each
SCREECH OWL HOUSES
Screech owls prefer abandoned woodpecker holes at the edge of a field
or neglected orchard. They will readily take to a box lined with an inch or
two of wood shavings. If you clean the box out in late spring after the
young owls have fledged, you may attract a second tenant-a kestrel.
Trees isolated from larger tracts of woods have less chance of squirrels
taking over the box.

TREE & SHRUB SALE - GENERAL INFORMATION
SEEDLING DESCRIPTION: All stock is bare root. They are 1 or 2 years old. Average height is 4 to 8 inches for Evergreens, and 6 to
12 inches or more for Hardwoods. See the rest of mailing for more additional information on trees & shrub species and the other
items offered.
ORDERING INFORMATION:
Orders are filled on a "first come, First served" basis. Since all trees are pre-ordered, each species is
available while quantities last. The District must reserve the right to make substitutions with similar species, and/or issue refunds,
should order quantities exceed the number available due to circumstances beyond our control. No refunds will be given for trees not
picked up after 7 days past the effective pick-up date. All orders must be prepaid. Checks or money orders should be made out to
"CHAUT. CO. SWCD"
SPECIES SELECTION:
Choose your species carefully using the information provided. If you should have any questions, we will be
glad to assist you in your selections. The District cannot be responsible for the success or failure of your plantings.
PICK-UP DAY:
You will be notified by First Class mail when and where to pick up your trees. There will be two (3) pick-up days at the
Jamestown location, and one (1) day at the Dunkirk-Fredonia location. Please be sure to indicate your pick-up site preference on the
order form.
CARE OF YOUR SEEDLINGS:
Poor survival can be attributed to poor handling, planting or care. Immediately check seedlings to
see if they have dried out. Keep moist, not wet at all times. Keep in a cool, shaded, humid place until planting. Plant seedlings as
soon as possible! If you can't plant within 3-4 days, it is best to "heel" them in. To "heel in", follow these directions:
1. Dig a trench for your shrubs in a cool moist area where
they will be protected from the sun and wind so their
development will be retarded. The trench should be deep
enough to permit burying all roots.
2. Remove all packing material or grass that may harbor mice.
3. Place seedling bundles along one side of a trench,
cut the strings and spread out the plants.
4. Spread out the roots, refill the trench and pack the soil
firmly around the roots. So no air pockets are present.
5. Keep the soil moist around the seedlings.
PERMANENT PLANTING:
If an area is too wet to drive on or mow much of the year, chances are it's too wet for good tree growth.
The illustrated planting method works well for small bare-root seedlings. Use a shovel, soil spade or dibble bar (tree planting bar) as
shown:
Avoid these common errors: They kill healthy seedlings:
POST PLANTING CARE:
Proper care after planting increases survival rate:
1. Deep, thorough watering when rain is lacking - 1st year.
2. Weed control for first 2-3 years is critical.
3. Control pests such as deer, mice, etc. using management or tree Tubes.

Helpful Steps for Successful Plantings
Location
— It is very important to select a location that matches your plant’s light and
moisture preferences.
Always match the garden to the plant, not the other way around. If you have a sun-loving plant that likes to dry out
between watering, it will never be happy in a partly-shaded, waterside location.
Hole
— Plants need a large hole so roots can spread
and settle in.
Not only will this allow roots to spread out, but it will also allow you to
improve your soil with the additives your plant needs to thrive. Remem-
ber: the better your soil, the bigger and faster your plants will grow.
Mud
— Create a “mud bath” for roots to ease transplant shock and keep roots safe from air
pockets.
Once your plant is in the ground, make a raised rim of soil around it, slightly wider than its roots, and fill it to the brim
with water. This will help hold water around the roots until the plant established in its new home. Muddying-in ensures
that the roots are drenched in water and prevents air pockets in the soil surrounding the roots.
Food
—Plants do not live on love alone! Feed new plants to get them off to a good start.
Unless you already have rich, fertile soil, your plants need extra food to grow their best.
Regular additions of compost and other organics are terrific, but you will also want to use
other fertilizers to stimulate growth and help the plant get off to a strong start.
Water
—a good rule of thumb to follow is an inch of water a week to
keep plants hydrated and happy.
In spring and early summer Mother Nature may take care of this for you, but once you go two weeks
without a steady, hard rainfall, it’s time to get the sprinkler! If many of your plants are in containers,
you need to be even more vigilant—many of these plants may need water every day during the hot-
test summer weather.
Mulch
—to save water, keep down weeds, and protect plants.
Mulch is simply any material applied on top of the soil around your plants to keep moisture in
and weeds out. It may be organic, such as straw, pine needles, grass clippings, leaves, com-
post, bark and even sawdust. Or it may be inorganic: ground-up tires, small rocks, polyethyl-
ene sheets, etc. Simple leave a few inches between your plant’s stem and the mulch, so the
Soil
—Build better soil! Improve your soil regularly to ensure nearly trouble free gardening.
FIND OUT WHAT YOUR SOIL NEEDS
. Begin with a test from
your local Cooperative Extension Service. They will tell you how to
take a soil sample and will test it for a minimal charge.
ADD LOTS OF ORGANIC MATTER
. No matter what your soil
needs, you can’t go wrong by adding organics; compost, well rotted
manure, peat moss—frequently and heavily. Every time you prepare
to replant annual beds take the time to work in as much organic matter
as you can lay your hands on. When you weed your perennial and
shrub borders, work organic matter into the soil. When you mulch
before frost, apply 4 to 5 inches of good organic material. With each
watering the organics will be dispersed, and eventually your soil will
be rich and easy to work with.

WINDBREAKS
DEFINITION AND USES.
Windbreaks serve as obstacles to surface winds. They are created by planting trees or shrubs in strips
across the direction of prevailing winds.
DESIGN AND LOCATION.
Windbreak plantings are generally narrow and long, from a few feet to 40 feet in width. They should ex-
tend beyond the actual area to be protected in order to be effective at the ends. Their height depends
upon the kinds of plants used. Trees may reach 40 or 50 feet or more in height. The location is mainly on
the windward side of the area being protected. Effective control is obtained for a distance of 10 to 20
times the windbreak height on the leeward side.
The spacing of two or more plantings may be based on the height and effective distance for control. Thus
a windbreak with an effective height of 10 feet will give protection for 100 to 200 feet while one of 30 feet
will serve a distance up to 600 feet. This is the maximum spacing recommended for extensive areas of
cultivated land. At this distance, the ground wind velocity may be reduced only 15 to 20 percent but this
may still be effective for wind protection. It is important to know that windbreaks only partially control
wind velocity and that over most of the area affected, the wind will still have over half its total velocity.
Since the fully effective height will not be attained for a considerable period, often 10 to 25 years, it may be
desirable to plant additional temporary windbreaks, to be removed as the others reach adequate effective-
ness.
To be most effective, the permanent windbreak planting should be triangular in cross section, wide at the
bottom and narrow at the top. Two center rows of evergreen trees, bordered on each side by a row of me-
dium-height shrubs and then a row of low shrubs is recommended for the best protection of large fields,
especially where destructive winds commonly come from more than one direction. Spacing should be 12
to 14 feet in the rows and between rows for the evergreen trees except for northern white cedar, which
should be spaced 6 to 8 feet apart in the row.
The number of trees may be doubled and the spacing halved in order to speed early effectiveness but if
this is done, these extra plants should be removed in about five years. The next row of shrubs should be 6
to 12 feet from the trees, with the plants 4 to 6 feet apart in the row. The outer row of small shrubs should
be 4 feet from the inner shrubs and 3 to 4 feet apart in the rows. All plants should be placed in positions
staggered with those in adjacent rows.
Narrower plantings may suffice for many situations. The omission of the two shrub rows on the leeward
side provides a desirable break about 30 feet wide. Where tall trees will not adversely affect adjacent crop
growth, a two-row planting of one tree row and one shrub row on the windward side will do.
KINDS OF PLANTS TO USE.
Since windbreaks are generally planted on good land, many tree and shrub species are suitable insofar as
soil needs go. Among the evergreen trees, the Norway spruce, white spruce, northern white cedar, hem-
lock, white pine, red pine and scotch pine are best. For the higher shrubs, the serviceberry is recom-
mended.
Since it is very important to have the windbreak develop as rapidly as possible, cultivation between the
rows is advisable until the plants are about 3 feet high. Use of a complete fertilizer on the shrubs after the
first year is recommended. Mulching may be used as a substitute for cultivation where preferred.
